A line from Machiavelli’s The Prince and The Discourses, The Modern Library translation. I must confess that I have not actually read the work; this is one of those quotes that get bandied around (misattributed or apocryphal, as often as not) to far more eyes and ears than its original context ever does. The curse and the blessing of memorable writing, I suppose.
